rétrospective au Guggenheim Bilbao jusqu’au 6 septembre 2009
Cai Guo Qiang est l’artiste chinois le plus coté du moment (concepteur des feux d’artifice de la cérémonie d’ouverture des Jeux olympiques). L’artiste s’est fait connaître pour avoir inventé une technique spécifique consistant à utiliser de la poudre à canon pour dessiner sur papier.
Mais ce créateur a surtout fait parler de lui en réalisant des grandes installations in situ, des mises en scène qui questionnent la violence du monde contemporain : Une meute de 99 loups s’écrasant sur une vitre, pour le mur de Berlin ; des voitures volant avec des gerbes de néon, pour les attentats-suicides.
Je veux croire est une exposition qui explore le vocabulaire visuel et conceptuel de cet artiste à travers quatre domaines : les dessins à base de poudre à canon, les projets d’explosions, les installations et les projets sociaux. Plus de 40 pièces, qui vont des années quatre-vingt à la période actuelle, provenant d’importantes collections publiques et privées des États- Unis, d’Europe et d’Asie, servent de base à une étude de l’apport significatif, à la fois formel et conceptuel, de Cai à l’art contemporain international. Ainsi, l’accrochage n’oublie pas d’évoquer son influence comme créateur de spectacles socialement provocateurs pour de vastes audiences, parmi lesquels se compte son récent travail comme pilier de l’équipe créative responsable des cérémonies d’ouverture et de clôture des Jeux Olympiques de Pékin 2008. Cette rétrospective essentielle est la première exposition individuelle que le Musée Guggenheim Bilbao consacre à un artiste né en Chine.
Dans l’art de la déflagration, Cai Guo Qiang se pose non seulement en maitre, mais aussi en catalyseur de pléthore d’influences issues de la mythologie chinoise et des techniques innovantes du monde occidental...
Cai Guo Qiang expérimente différentes énergies en les incorporant à la fois dans un contexte environnemental et mystique... "Au Japons j’ai découvert des similitudes entre astrophysique ( les trous noirs, le big bang, etc) et le taoïsme. Ces deux perceptions parlent, chacun à leur façon, de chaos avant la naissance du monde, de déflagration apportant la vie sur terre. D’où l’intervention progressive de la poudre à canon dans mon travail." " et la vie est un perpétuel mouvement. Tout change. Rien ne reste en place...Que ce soit les êtres humains, les sciences, la religion, l’art, nous vivons en mutation constante entre le yin et le yang, le visible et l’invisible...
